Falling Apart

On Monday the lock on the front door of the house broke.  This morning I wanted to walk into the garden to get some fresh air and the handle came off in my hand.

What is happening to the house?

  1. Shit happens… especially to high tech stuff. We (I) have had lots of things go wrong this past year. Car was broken into and they grabbed my brief case with all the electronic things.. GPS, PDA, DigiCam, cell phone, laser mearuring, thumb drive, wallet and so forth.
Then the DSL line went south and I had to swtich to a cable modem after weeks of service calls. Then the network printer died, but it’s also the fax and copier. The the TV died, so we got a big Sony LCD hi def and it died after a few months (just repaired yesterday), New outboard carb went south and had to be replaced, one GPS plotter died and is now in CA being repaired. The Audi is fine. I’m sure there’s more.

    Life is 90% maintenance.

  2. There are companies who will sell you a maintenance contract and will come fix whatever is wrong with your house including appliances. With what you are doing right now, it might make sense to get one so that is one less thing to worry about.

  3. My late husband kept a book with all his electrical purchases and when they died. I don’t think we’ve had a TV fail since I married him 22 years ago. But video recorders seem to last only a couple of years.

I just felt it strange that two non-electrical and very mechanical bits went within days of each other.

  4. VCR’s are so cheap as in both price and quality. I guess one of the advantages to renting an apartment is if anything goes wrong just call it in and they will come out and fix it. Not much has gone wrong though being this place was built in 2002/2003 and I am the original resident in this unit.

  5. One of the oddities about a lot of things called white goods over here, like washing machines and dryers, is that they are now much easier to repair than they were twenty years ago.

I was told this by a guy in the pub on the corner, who repairs them for a living.

He said now that because they are designed to be manufactured cheaply, they are designed so much better and are very easy to put together and take apart.

You can get the spares easily on the Internet too. But he says that he hopes not too many realise this, as a lot of his clients are well capable of mending their own machines.
